Objective: In this experiment, I did some physical tests and chemical tests in order to

 

identify the two unknown alcohols specifically such as the types of alcohol, the chain

1. Physical Test

 

a. Solubility in water: In this lab, I conducted solubility tests on the controls and

 

two unknown C, D by adding 10 drops of unknowns or controls into 1ml of

 

deionized water to test the length of carbon in the unknown alcohol.

2. Chemical Tests

 

a. Chromic Acid Test: In a test tube, I placed 2-3 drops of the liquid with some

 

drops of acetone, added chromic acid agent, stirred, and observed color

 

change. If the reaction ran fast, the unknown was 20 alcohol. If the reaction

 

ran slow, the unknown was 10 alcohol. Data:

b. Lucas Test: In a test tube, I placed the unknown and controls followed by 10

 

drops of Lucas reagent, shook, and watched for cloudiness. If no changed, I

 

immersed the test tube in water bath and observed again. Fast reaction for 30

 

alcohol, slow reaction for 20 alcohol. Data

c. Iodoform Test: In order to test for methyl carbinols, I added 5 drops of liquid

 

with10% NaOH, added 10 drops of KI solutions, and observed the presence of
