Global 1 ? First Paper Prompt

DUE JULY 8 BY 5P

Prompt:

After a tense vote, citizens in the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union, a move that

caught many by surprise. The decision will have long-lasting and far-reaching consequences around the

globe in areas of economics, migration and immigration, cultural expression and international politics.

The EU is the end result of the European Economic Community (EEC) morphing into the European

Commission (EC), which then morphed into the EU. While it was initially envisioned to create a single

market throughout Europe, integrating the economies of member-states, this gradual shift reflects a

growing awareness that economic integration alone is impossible, and that politics and cultural values

are necessarily also involved.

Britain was not an original member of the EEC, but was one of the EU?s most significant financial

contributors. So-called ?leavers? largely referenced economic concerns alongside cultural ones as

behind their choice. Long having portrayed itself as an island nation going it alone, it was hoped the

UK?s membership in the EU would serve to avert future world wars by deeply integrating it with its

European neighbors. The decision to leave raises concerns about what the nation?s renewed

isolationism might foretell.

In this paper you will use a global perspective and concepts from assigned readings/lectures to show

your understanding of the Brexit and how it is connected to a long history of interconnection. In doing

so you should specifically attend to the following issues:

1) In what ways is this decision connected to liberal ideas coming out of the enlightenment, and

models that can be traced back to the democratic revolutions of the 17 th-19th centuries?

2) In what ways do western colonial and imperial legacies contribute to the issue? How have those

legacies helped set up the relationships between the nations of the EU?

3) How is a global perspective necessary to help us appreciate the possible consequences of the

Brexit on multiple levels of experience, such as economic, political, cultural, social, perhaps

environmental etc.? (Choose those you are most interested in.)

Directions: Your paper should be approximately 1200 words or about 3-4 pages. It should include

references to at least 4 class readings or lectures, and at least 3 news articles (from reputable sources).

Citations are required for both paraphrasing and direct quotes from either texts or lecture. Feel free to

cite other books and articles as needed. Please include a full list of works cited at the end of your essay

(this would be in addition to the 1200 word count).

Note: I am not asking you to simply summarize the readings, but rather use them to make a coherent

argument about the topic. Cite specific concepts, short quotes and examples from the readings as

evidence to support your own argument. Please pay careful attention to spelling, grammar and

punctuation.

Submit your paper online by 5:00p on Friday July 8.
